Newton’s First Law

I recently discovered something about my marriage. My husband and I hold pretty much the same values and share the same faith and have many of the same tastes and preferences. However, we have very different personalities.

I have realized that my husband and I are living examples of Newton’s first law of physics. You know the one: an object at rest tends to stay at rest and an object in motion tends to stay in motion unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. Brandon’s at rest and I’m in motion. I tend toward activity, I set a course and march along it until given compelling reason to stop. Brandon sets back and does his day to day and waits until given a compelling reason to act.

There is a missionary by the name of Paul Washer that we both really like and have found to be very biblically sound, even if he is reformed. He states that the purpose of marriage, as all things in this life, is to conform us to the image of Christ. God has perfectly orchestrated each person in a marriage to be strong in all the areas s/he must be strong in order to not tempt the other beyond what they can bear; yet God has also perfectly orchestrated weaknesses in each that will guide the other to be more Christ-like.

Is my full-steam-ahead attitude a strength or a weakness? No doubt both. Lord, give me wisdom. Teach me to watch your eyes. Give me patience to wait on your word and on the husband you have given me. Give me a heart that does it gladly. Make me more like your precious Son.
